"The Rally to Restore Sanity" 10-30-10

Now that I have some time, I'm going to try to give an account of my time in Washington DC this weekend. I went with a group of 5 other guys to attend "The Rally to Restore Sanity" on Saturday- like hundreds of thousands of other fun-loving, engaged citizens.

If I had no traveling companions, I definitely wouldn't have made the trip... so it was great to have my brother and some other guys we know want to go, too.

We were totally psyched for the trip & our one friend known as 'Shooski' aka 'The Shoosk' has a brother who lives in DC, which helped our planning alot. Shoosk wanted to get a hotel, and we all eventually realized this was the best way to go since we could stay & really have a good time. Another one of the guys 'The Rev' offered to drive down in his truck and park at the hotel, so we were good to go.

Both my brothers went to a Freeway concert in Philly the night before the trip. I, on the other hand, was on my back patio at 10Pm on Friday nite ripping apart small wooden pallets to use for sign handles. Only one of my brothers could go to the rally on Sat., but thanks to the concert he was late & hungover the next morning. He didn't hear the end of that for the next 24 hours.

Once we got rolling, we faced the notorious state-long traffic jam known as Delaware. The traffic slowed on 95 a little but the drive overall wasn't horrible. Once we got to the hotel, the plan was to take the metro. We didn't realize the inevitable until we paid for our tickets & got down there- that it was like a Japanese subway with people packed in every car like sardines. There was literally not room for one single person in any of the cars. After several of the trains stopped & went without being able to fit anyone, we decided to bail.

We went back up to the streets to take a bus or cab. It was past noon & the rally had already started, so we wanted to makes moves fast. We lucked out & saw a minivan taxi who picked us up. Since there were 6 guys, I volunteered to sit in the van's hatchback just to get to the damn rally.

Once we got to the general area of the park, we got out & followed the large streams of people leading toward the nexus of the event. We walked for a bit & once we got into the grass we found a spot to put our 'protest signs' together. I had earlier busted my staple gun back at the parking garage, but thanks to my general desire to be prepared I also had a whole roll of wide masking tape. I weaved the tape around the handles and taped over the tape! I was frantically trying to get all 6 signs together & eventually got everyone else to help the process along. Surprisingly, the signs held up for the entire day & made the effort worth it.

Once we had our signs, the real fun began. We could just walk around & watch the madness. Immediately, we realized all the rally signs that I made were a hit- as people started taking pictures, laughing & making approving comments.

I was carrying my "Savior/Liberal Devil" sign that people kept asking me to flip around. My brother wanted the "Teabagging Takes Balls" sign, which got alot of laughs throughout the day. Shooski of course carried the sign saying "Shooski is Here!", with "Ralph Wiggum 2012" taped to the back. People kept laughing when reading out loud the Shooski sign or saw my Monkey Buddha signature on the other signs, even though they had no idea what it meant.

As we kept walking toward the main crowd, the sea of people kept getting thicker & thicker & thicker!

Our highly-visible signs came in handy as we tried to keep together & navigate the massive crowd. I have never seen that many people in one place. It was almost surreal to be amongst that large a gathering of seemingly endless variety & number. It's hard to describe, but 'astounding' comes to mind. As we slowly pushed our way along Madison Dr., the crowd near us was being amused by a Jesus hanging up on a traffic light. It could have been an impersonator, but he did have the crowd enraptured by his antics. Once we got closer, I realized his sign said "Jesus Loves Obama". He was perched up there for a while.

Other people were climbing trees, standing on walls, trying to get any high vantage point. Even going up on a little hill, though, it was possible to get a glimpse the size of the crowd extending out in all directions. Eventually we needed a break from the shoulder-to-shoulder people & went off to more open side parks & wandered for a bit.

At some point after we rejoined the crowd, my brother & I realized we lost a couple people. This wouldn't be a problem, but nobody had any cell phone service. Without being able to text each other, we'd never find them. We looked for the 'Shooski is Here!' sign, but all we saw were thousands of other people who were not The Shoosk, as far as the eye could see. We debated with the other 2 guys with us if we should hang out, or just walk around. I realized we didn't prepare for something like this at all. There was no meeting time or place, most of us didn't have the hotel info, etc.

Instead of worrying about it, we decided to hang out around 7th & Madison for awhile. The four of us took over the corner & held our signs up while shouting ridiculous slogans to the throngs of people walking by. We always had at least a couple people trying to take pictures of each sign. I was constantly flipping mine around for people to see both sides. During this time when I was appealing to the masses, I could barely manage to take photos of my own, but I still got a bunch of good ones.

After maybe an hour, we finally had a text message come through from the other guys & were able to meet back up. It turns out they were right near us, but in a different area so we didn't see each other.

This might sound crazy, but like alot of people I didn't hear or see any of the actual rally!!! From where we were, I could barely make out Colbert & Stewart's voices and had to look through trees across the park to see the huge video screens beside the stage. Missing the scheduled entertainment was totally alleviated by the plentiful entertainment provided by the rally-goers themselves. I like to observe things & people-watch, so this was like visual overload. There were so many crazy people, costumes, signs, & things going on in the street, that missing the show was almost inconsequential. I still haven't been able to go watch it all online yet!

The idea of promoting reasonable discourse & open-mindedness should not be revolutionary, but the two hosts should be proud of their effort to promote a more constructive way of thinking.

After the rally was officially over, the other guys wanted to go find a restaurant in town which was another bad call because every food place in the area had a half-hour wait or more. I would have just hung out around the park area for a while longer, but I wasn't sweating it. We finally ended up all jamming into a regular cab & going back to the hotel.

We found a cafe type restaurant near the hotel to chill out & eat. As we were waiting for our food, the manager or owner came up to us an said something in a thick accent, but I thought I heard it very clearly. Incidentally, I was pretty buzzed by this time after finishing my Sprite bottle mix of Tanqueray. I looked at the guy quizzically and asked him, "Did you just say your name is... 'Master Something' ???" ...which is what I swore he said! Everybody laughed because they thought he said the same thing. It turns out, he was asking if we needed mustard & some other condiments, so I apologized for the misunderstanding. However, he is now forever "Master Something" in our minds. On the way out, some of us wanted to take our leftovers to eat later. I asked 'Master Something' for a couple boxes for the food. He looked at me like I was from another planet, so I tried asking for containers instead. He nodded & went in the back. He came back with 2 large cardboard packing crates! Another waiter had brought us out actual food containers in the meantime. He must have saw that, along with the mixture of amusement & bewilderment on my face, because he continued walking with the big boxes right out the front door to put them in the trash. He tried to apologize but I told him not to worry about it.

Back at the hotel, everyone was wiped out & it was only the late afternoon. The plan was to go out on the town that night after we had rested up a little. I ended up passing out for a little bit.

................

When I woke up, it was nighttime & time to get ready to go out. The combination of gin & the cold I was fighting this weekend made me look like I was a wreck. We each took showers & changed, then were ready to head out to the Adams Morgan neighborhood of DC.

For some reason, none of us thought to even bring costumes, despite Colbert encouraging it on his show for the rally. My brother had a crazy vampire mask he was wearing under his Día de los Muertos hoodie. However, he didn't bring it out to the bars. It wasn't long before we saw people in costume, and when we got into the town, we realized everyone on the streets was in costumes!

From then on out it was bar-hopping & taking pictures with people in awesome costumes. We actually felt out of place because we were some of the few people not dressed up. I was wearing a black hoodie, so I put it up- to be at least partially disguised! Regardless, we had a good time & stayed out till we shut the bars down at 2.

Overall, it was a wild, action-packed day that many thousands of other people also got to enjoy. The rally, its purpose, and its effects have been endlessly analyzed already. To me personally, the spirit of the gathering was that of good-natured social awareness, tinged with a healthy dose of absurdity & humor.

I took about 100 photos on Saturday of the rally & the nightlife. I edited the set down to these, showing the size of the rally, and the multitude of characters inhabiting the nation's capital for a truly memorable day.

More of the story is detailed in the photo captions...

Goodbye, Colbert Report

Last night, I watched the final episode of "The Colbert Report". It was a great end to one of my all-time favorite shows:

I've been watching The Colbert Report since the very first episode. Having already been a fan of the Daily Show, I was was eager to see what kind of humor Stephen Colbert would bring on a nightly basis.

In many ways, Colbert surpassed Jon Stewart & his former gig at the Daily Show. The brilliance of his performance cannot be understated. Night after night, he has exposed the absurdities in our culture, politics, entertainment, & all aspects of our lives.

Even though I didn't get to see actually see him there, one of the most interesting events of my life was "The Rally to Restore Sanity" that he and Stewart organized in Washington DC. The crowd was, by far, the biggest mass of human beings that I've ever encountered. My brother and I went with our friends and had a truly memorable time.

Our Lord & Savior, St. Stephen
This is one of the "protest" signs I made for the rally

Stephen Colbert is simply the greatest satirical mind of our generation. His spot-on parody of a self-absorbed, corporate boot-licking, blindly patriotic ignoramus was pure genius. His persona allowed him to openly mock the viewpoints of idiotic, right-wing blowhards who are so wrong about everything in the world- like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly & America's stupidest pundit, Sean Hannity.

What I give both Stewart & Colbert the most credit for is providing sanity through humor, amidst the madness and chaos of the world we live in.

This was especially true during the Dark Ages of the Bush/Cheney presidency. All these conservatives who now think life under Obama is so terrible... they completely forget the constant horror the world faced while Dubya & his Dungeon Master caused havoc in America and around the globe.

In this light, I believe Stephen Colbert's most historic contribution to comedy was his speech at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner. It was the ultimate example of speaking truth to power, and took giant balls of red, white, & blue steel.  It was especially satisfying for those of us who deeply disagreed with Bush's policies at the time, yet risked being called 'anti-American' or 'terrorist sympathizers' for daring to speak out against the War Monkey and the morons who unquestioningly supported his regressive agenda.

Thank you Stephen Colbert, for providing nightly laughs and comic relief to your Nation for almost a decade.

Rally to Restore Sanity!!!

No sooner did I finish writing about the craziness of the extreme right-wing ideologues & Tea Party candidates dominating the national political discourse... than I turned on The Daily Show to see the big announcement.

Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert have been hinting at some kind of event, a la Glenn Beck. Tonight, Jon Stewart revealed the planned "Rally to Restore Sanity" which is probably going to make Beck's facetious 'Rally to Restore Honor' look like a little picnic.

This is so great. I am absolutely going if it's humanly possible. The Daily Show's political humor & reverence for The Absurd helped me smile through the years of incompetence/malfeasance of the Bush Administration. I've been watching The Colbert Report since the first episode and now both shows are required viewing for me.

Despite the satirical nature of the event, my fellow Daily Show viewers are actually the most accurately informed news consumers. You have to know the people, facts, & context of current events to understand all the jokes on the shows. It's hard to follow the humor if you're an ignoramus.

Anyway, I'm psyched, & if it goes according to plan it should be an awesome day.

Sanity Rally Preview

The Rally to Restore Sanity in Washington DC this weekend was awesome!

I'm too tired to even start writing about it all now, but I'll probably upload all the photos & post a full account in the next day or two.

Meanwhile I'll post up a picture from the rally itself- with myself, my brother, and one of the other guys in our group holding our "protest" signs.

Also below is the very last photo before my camera died at the end of the night @ 2AM, after partying in DC's Adams Morgan neighborhood. I was surrounded by Gagas...

'Rally To Restore Sanity' Signs

So, I've been planning on going to Washington DC for The Rally to Restore Sanity with my brother & some of our friends. The hotel rooms have been booked so now it's on!

I have been watching The Daily Show since Jon Stewart became host, & I've watched The Colbert Report since the first show. In a weird way, I've always considered their comedic, absurdist outlook on politics & current events to be more credible than the polished facade that characterizes the 24-hour news networks.

Organizing a huge event solely to highlight the need for reasonable political discourse was a stroke of genius for this crazy election season. The reactionaries in politics & the media have become so nuts that we actually need to demonstrate that there are still sane people left! Even though society's chaotic multitude of perspectives is what keeps life interesting, too much chaos can tear things apart.

Since I probably won't have a chance to post anything before the rally, I'll share some fun posters I created last weekend that we're getting made into signs. There's definitely going to be alot of people wearing costumes and carrying all kinds of crazy signage. Hopefully it will be a good time, to say the least. There will be a full report if & when I get back.

Crazy Greed

I think this trader is being honest to the extent that he's giving a clear glimpse into the mind of a sociopathic financial parasite.

He's also right that without checks on their power & influence, Goldman Sachs and the other 'too-big-to-fail' banks & investment firms are an unstoppable cancer draining the wealth from society.

I don't enjoy working with numbers, so I would never work in the financial industry. Trading stocks & managing investments would be like my nightmare job, it just seems so crazy. Maybe, to some extent, it is:

Daily Mail:

Obviously, not everyone who works for a bank is a greedy lunatic out to pillage mankind.
However, the fact that the looting of our country by these corporate vampires has gone completely unpunished has given rise to the 'Occupy Wall Street' protest in NYC that has been going on for almost 2 weeks.

The great populist of our time, Michael Moore, was on MSNBC live from Wall St. earlier & stood up for all the working people who are preyed upon by the nation's banking institutions. He's right on the money, so to speak.

of the interview

The only thing I've ever been a part of that could be a considered a protest was the awesome huuuuuge rally in DC organized by Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert.

I've got a good job & need to pay my bills, so I've got nothing to get really pissed off about. However, I'm glad there's all those activists who are there. They are helping to bring awareness to the massive injustices happening on in our county, so people feel empowered to speak out and take action against them.

Bilderberg Conference Protests 2012

This past weekend, friends asked me to join them in protests taking place around the hotel that was hosting the 2012 Bilderberg Conference, in Chantilly, Virginia.

The Bilderberg Meetings are private, off the record forums attended by the members of the political, media, and corporate elite from around the globe. Critics of this secretive gathering claim that all kinds of nefarious conspiracies are being hatched from this event.

Official Site:

I decided to spend part of my weekend to go, in order to indulge my interests in politics, conspiracies (actual & theoretical), global affairs, &, most of all, people watching.

So, I drove down I-95 into Virginia where the meeting was held this year. When we got to the protest, I donned my high-tech Monkey Buddha protest disguise, specially designed to thwart advanced facial-recognition technologies being used by security. Ok, actually... it was a baseball cap & sunglasses to keep my face from getting burnt by the afternoon sun.

The only other political rally I've ever been to was "The Rally to Restore Sanity" in Washington DC. That is when a massive crowd of 250,000 people gathered on the capitol mall at the behest of Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert. It's the most people I've ever seen in one place. As you can see from the photos, that event was pure insanity. It was meant to help express a general frustration with the political state of the country.

This protest was a very targeted one, however, and there were maybe 1,000 protesters at the most. It was a very lively crowd, though. There were people from many different walks of life: students, activists, vets, families, working people of all kinds, retired folks, all trying to bring some accountability to the knuckleheads running the world. There were a few people who were acting a little crazy, but overall it was pretty peaceful.

A couple guys working the megaphones were from We Are Change, who made a bunch of videos confronting high-profile Bilderberg members. There were also people there from groups like The Oathkeepers, who are former military & police officers that are committed to preventing abuses of the 2nd amendment by those making & enforcing the law.

The protesters were specifically trying to bring attention to the fact that all these high-level people from around the world are gathering in secret to discuss global policy matters. Despite the main concern of the protest being the secretive nature of the Bilderberg Meetings, the people there were discussing a wide variety of issues that should be getting more coverage from the corporate media.

The Pied Piper of this particular movement is definitely Alex Jones, the host of the internet radio show Infowars. Although I don't listen to the show, I've been aware of him for awhile. Although he often dwells on conspiracy theories, of varying degrees of believability, he does seem to be trying to expose the tendency of those in power to create actual conspiracies.

The Guardian:

Alex is a very forceful & charismatic personality. He was being constantly followed by a crowd & made several rants over the megaphone toward the "elitist scum" inside the hotel. I can see how the cult of personality has grown around him, but it would be a mistake to rely on him for all your information. He'll drag you down the NWO 'rabbit hole' until you go nuts. Personally, I always try to assimilate a diversity of viewpoints, from both mainstream & alternative news sources. Though watching Fox News pundits usually makes me feel nauseous, I try to take even them in once in awhile, just to see drastically different viewpoints from my own.

Here is a pic of me & my friend Loretta with Alex Jones wearing a sombrero, probably one of the greatest photos I've ever been in:

It was a very interesting experience, but I don't think it did much to stop whatever global political agendas are being implemented. That doesn't mean we can't get out there & practice our right to free speech, in protest of the greedy, short-sighted a-holes who are ruining the world.

Here are some photos of the protest outside the grounds of the hotel, (which I may or may not be in):

Egypt's Popular Revolt

All the protests going on across the Middle East & N Africa are truly historic, regardless of the unforeseen circumstances that will eventually arise.

The only "protest"-type event I've ever been to was the Rally to Restore Sanity in DC. Although the overall intention was humorous, it was a statement by 100's of thousands of citizens that the ignorant buffoonery so prevalent in American politics isn't going to be suffered in silence.

The fact that so many people are now willing to demonstrate against these anachronistic monarchies and harsh military dictatorships is a sign of a threshold of empowerment being reached for the average person around the world.

One interesting, yet overlooked, development of this particular situation is reinforcement of the premise that access to the Internet & media is a basic right of free people everywhere.

Even an iron-fisted government like Egypt has proven incapable of completely shuttering communication. Besides finding work-arounds, the population will just go friggin nuts. Modern society is totally emeshed in the World Wide Web for social contacts, business, information, creatvity, etc.

If it's come to the point were the government is trying to turn off the series of tubes leading to The Internets, well,... things are probably going to get crazy...

Teabagging Election Madness

With mid-term elections coming up & all kinds of political freak-shows going on, the Tea Party factions have added another layer of crazy to the traditional electoral madness.

As an Independent voter, I have no problem with an alternative political party- even what I may personally consider a misguided "conservative" one! However it's disturbing to see the irrationality & childish hysteria many of these Teabagger candidates display toward anything concerning The Government... or history's most notorious marxist black panther muslim terrorist sympathizer -Chairman Barack Hussein Mao-bama.

I also came across an excellent list of general Teabagger priorites to reduce Big Bad Government. Of course, reducing our ridiculously bloated Defense budget would be unthinkable. We all know that Jesus loved unrestrained military spending!

TPM:
"Top Six Established Laws That
Tea Partiers Claim Are Unconstitutional"

Despite their tirades against the federal government, these so-called "conservatives" don't openly provide an accurate portrayal of their alternative solution - unregulated corporate power over society. This is the ultimate consequence of their policies, despite the fact that Wall Street & big business clearly abuse their power when not countered by a strong government. It's bizarre that there's even a possibility that the most extreme right-wing ideologues could gain some power back after nearly sinking this country with unfunded mandates, financial de-regulation, and ungodly expensive wars. Reckless conservative policies had 8 loooong years to dismantle the country, and moderates & progressives are supposed to clean it all up in less than 2 yrs! It's so absurd.

Although the perception is that it's a grassroots movement, the big money and organization behind the Tea Party movement have come from ultra-wealthy right-wing corporatists & organizations.

While lesser known influences like Koch Industries are pouring money into this election cycle, Fox News is the most visible cheerleader for the Teabagger's cause. Like all right-wing agendas, their main objective is to make money. Rupert Murdoch & Roger Ailes are purposely marketing polarizing perspectives to their viewers primarily to enhance their brand... and therefore their profits. Being an avid news consumer, I realize all the news networks do this to some extent, but Fox News is political advocacy on steroids. Even a former Fox personality acknowledged the company is cynically polarizing the American public to financially benefit themselves.

The Tea Party financial ties are illustrated in this chart featured on Crooks & Liars, which is more interesting & accurate than Glenn Beck's incoherent chalkboard scribbles:

The endless stream of bullsh*t flowing through politics & the media who are covering the process is one reason people like me are attending The Rally to Restore Sanity this weekend. It is an expression of the recognition that we are living in an insane world, with the public dialogue being controlled by insane people.

Fascist to the Core

In Trump We Trust
by The Monkey Buddha

In about a week, The United States of America faces it's ultimate test of our collective sanity, to date - The 2024 Presidential Election. Does the country elect an accomplished, competent career law enforcement officer & politician with a generally positive vision for the country in Kamala Harris... or do we re-elect a demented career con-man & criminal sociopath in Donald Trump, whose narcissistic desire for authoritarianism threatens the very existence of democracy?

In the past week, the widespread acceptance of calling this fascist fuck "a fascist" has finally taken hold of the national discourse. VP Harris herself has publicly agreed that the label fits his dictatorial tendencies. This recognition is mostly due to an interview with his longest-serving former chief of staff, retired Marine general John Kelly.

 CNN:
Trump’s Former Chief of Staff says
he fits ‘Fascist’ Definition and Prefers ‘Dictator Approach’

If you look at the actual definition of fascism, then yes, Donald Trump literally embodies it. From his bro-mances with murderous dictators, to calling top Democrats & anyone who opposes him "the enemy within", to his eagerness to use the military against non-combatant citizens, to his egotistical desire for the ostentatious trappings of power - Trump is a fascist, like a trout is a fish, by every meaning of the word.

Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultra-nationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.

However, Gen. Kelly is not, by any means, the only one who has called out Trump's ignorant & malevolent fascist nature. There Some quotes:

"The general definition of fascist” & “certainly prefers the dictator approach to government”.
-John Kelly: former general & Trump's chief of staff:

“FASCIST TO THE CORE” & was doing “great and irreparable harm”
-Mark Milley: retired US army general, served as the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under Trump & Biden.

“Anyone who puts themselves over the constitution should never be president of the United States, and anyone who asks someone else to put them over the constitution should never be president again.”
-Mike Pence- Trump's own VP, who was almost killed by Trump's insurrectionist mob on January 6th

Besides describing Trumps' fascist tendencies, other former staff have commented on his absolutely buffoonish ignorance:

"A moron" ...& a bit more generously, "His understanding of global events [and] his understanding of US history was really limited."
-Rex Tillerson, Trump's secretary of state

I think Michael Cohen, Trump's former attorney & "fixer" had the most delightfully simple, yet holistic take on Trump's personality:
“A cheat, a liar, a fraud, a bully, a racist, a predator and a conman.”

Donald Trump is a truly despicable person, & is a cartoonishly gross amalgam of humanity's worst traits.

Anyone with any insight at all & an understanding of history can recognize what a unique danger Trump's idiocy & authoritarianism is to American institutions, as well as to the well-being of humanity, in general. He truly brings out the worst in the vocal minority of people who follow the obnoxious asshole.

In a redux of the infamous 1939 Nazi rally that was also held there, the MAGA faithful gathered tonight in Madison Square Garden in New York City, for a large gathering of racists, weirdos, & fools. There is no nice way to describe anyone who would go to such a grotesque event, revering one of the most revolting public figures imaginable.

AP:
Trump's Madison Square Garden Event Features Crude and Racist Insults

Although most people think that Trump is a horrible person, the sway he holds on his faithful admirers is truly mind-boggling. The dangers that his malicious charisma present to society have always been apparent to the clear-eyed among us. I've been defining as Trump a fascist for awhile now. Right after he was elected in 2016, I made this visual analysis of the authoritarian penchant for black, white, & red:

The Fascist Color Palette
by The Monkey Buddha

Hopefully my fellow U.S. citizens can keep this fascist creep away from The Presidency in November... & ever again. There's no way in hell that Trump is winning the popular vote (even though the polls have somehow had this race tied the whole time), but everyone already knows there is MAGA electoral fuckery afoot. Even if he does clearly lose again, Trump will obviously just claim everything is "rigged" yet again. I mean, he's already admitted that's his game plan!

So, this is definitely a crazy time here in America, & the rest of the world is watching us as if we are outta our goddamn minds (& rightfully so). Hopefully we can boot this physically, mentally, & morally decrepit man & his ideology into the garbage bin of history in a few days, even though his toxic influence will continue to stain our national identity for the foreseeable future.
