3D "Dali's Crucifixion" by Paul Micarelli

Recently, I've been uploading my 3D Art into a Picasa album:

Since it's Good Friday, I thought it would be appropriate to present a rendering based on a painting by the surrealist master, Salvador Dalí. I've had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit with many of Dalí's work & he is definitely one of my favorite artists.

Several years ago, I made the scene in the 3D Vue software & gave a print of it to my sister for a Christmas gift.

It is Dalí's hyper-dimensional portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ:

Here is the original Dali painting:

Although the subject of the painting is obviously a stylized portrayal of the Crucifixion, there are also elements of Dali's sense of "Nuclear Mysticism".

The Cross itself is a 3-D representation of the theoretical 4-Dimensional object, known as a Hypercube, or Tesseract.

The arrangement of 8 cubes forming The Cross in Dali's painting is an unfolded Hypercube- similar to how an unfolded cube becomes 6 flat squares (which were previously the cube's faces).

By integrating the concept of hypercube geometry into the composition, Dali is equating the eventual Ascension with the idea of transcending this 3D reality, into the "higher" dimensions that are theorized to exist.

In fact, when I made the rendering of Dali's painting, I also made this simple visual explanation of how certain forms are just "shadows" of progressively higher-dimensional forms:

• The 0-dimensional point is a shadow of a line.
• The 1-dimensional line is a shadow of a square.
• The 2-dimensional square is a shadow of a cube.
• The 3-dimensional sides of a cube are the shadow of an (unfolded) hypercube.

If you look at the checkered floor in the painting-
Onto the dark squares beneath the Christ figure, Dali has projected the cross shadow (which is 2 dimensions 'lower' than the 4D Hypercube). This detail further emphasizes the theme of expanding into extra-dimensional space.

This painting is brilliant & seeing it in person inspired me to make this 3D homage.  It's been sitting on my computer, so I decided to finally share & comment on it.

"Seed of Life: Ascension" by Paul Micarelli

I created a series of 3D images featuring the pattern of circles known as the "Seed of Life".

They were already uploaded to my album of 3D Art & posted here individually, but I wanted to also show them as a group.

When I made them, I didn't really intend to make a series.

However, when the pictures are placed in order- it looks like the mysterious geometric form is emerging from the primordial waters, rising through the blue sky, and into the cosmos.

Once in the vast expanse of space, it's crystalline shell retracts & reveals the clear light of infinite consciousness.

Cool 3D World

Two things I enjoy are 3D animation and surrealism... and there are few places where those two ideas collide as thoroughly & weirdly as Cool 3D World.

Cool 3D World is a team of artists, Jon Baken & Brian Tessler who clearly delight in using their technical skills to push the limits of the absurd.

DazedDigital.com:

If you want to be completely confused & disgusted, be sure to watch their videos- featuring morphing humanoids, nonsensical scenery, disturbing sound effects, and generally mind-warpingly bizarre animation.

Here are some examples of the insane animations produced by Cool 3D World. For the love of all that's good, do not try to make sense of any of it:

"Sanctuary / Matrix Meditation" by Paul Micarelli

I've been adding images to my online album of 3D art.

This is a scene that is kind of my idealized tranquil space- a minimal, secluded area with a Zen feel to it & opening to nature:

After I made the original image, I decided that it was all an illusion- the "Sanctuary" exists only as computer code, pure information & light:

I made these images many years ago, but I recently made a looping animated GIF with these scenes. I wanted to make it look like there is "a glitch in The Matrix".

Who is the hidden avatar, meditating in the virtual realm?...

"Cosmic Seed of Life" by Paul Micarelli

This is the final pair of a series that I created, depicting a 3D version of the sacred geometry symbol, known as the "Seed of Life".

It is the core of the larger pattern of interlocking circles, "The Flower of Life".

The Seed of Life, a vehicle of knowledge, has traveled the beyond the planet among the stars.

It's protective shell has opened to reveal it's true nature- the clear white light that is the source of Creation.

3D Portraits by Hadi Karimi

  Salvador Dalí by Hadi Kamiri

I've had some experience in 3D computer graphics, and I love to see all the amazing artwork people create in that medium.

Artist Hadi Karimi digitally sculpts likenesses of historical figures in such a realistic manner that they look like photography. Being an expert in photo retouching, I can pick out fake images easily. However, these renderings are so convincing that they appear like real people, even to me.

www.hadikarimi.com

The artistry displayed here is absolutely astounding. As I look over these portraits again, I am baffled that someone can even do this! Not only is the sculpting of the faces impressive, but the coloring & textures, hair, clothing, and especially the lighting all lend to the realism of these images.

For each portrait, there are multiple viewing angles, again adding to the sense of dimensionality of each figure.

I would highly recommend visiting the artist's website, to marvel at the technical and creative skill shown in these 3D renderings.

I believe this is a step to digitally re-creating people of the past - both famous and of personal importance. I could see an industry of providing "virtual loved ones" that can be seen and interacted with using VR or holograms.

Technology like Deep Nostalgia, combined with this kind of realistic 3D modeling, could allow a person to choose from a library of historical figures, or the creation of an AI-generated avatar based on personal photos and video.

Maybe when my son is an old man, he will be able to generate a virtual version of me to converse with. People are inherently social and nostalgic creatures, so it would surprise me if that kind of application wasn't developed at some point in the future.

"Pristine" by Paul Micarelli

I've added another image to my online gallery of 3D art:

This scene shows a crystal-clear sky temple, containing a pristine gold relic in the shape of a star tetrahedron.

This is a sacred geometric figure- a 3D version of the religious symbol known as the "Star of David" or the "Seal of Solomon".

4D Hypercube Animation

On Cheezburger, of all places, I saw this cool animated visualization of higher dimensionality.

It shows the progression from a 1D line> to a 2D square> to a 3D cube> to a 4D hypercube.

Of course, since we cannot directly experience a 4-dimensional object, we are only seeing a 3D "shadow" of the theoretical form.

This same time last year, I posted about a 3D rendering I had made of Salvador Dali's "Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus)".

I had also posted a rendering I created, of a similar progression of dimensional forms- to show how each dimension that we perceive is a "shadow" of a higher one.

"Seed of Life Gold"

I have a gallery of 3D rendered art that I created, with hi-res images that I'll continually add to.

Here is another addition to the gallery, a sacred geometry symbol. It's a gold arrangement of circles known as "The Seed of Life", reflected in chrome to form an overlapping design:

Awhile ago, I used to make a lot of 3D art using Vue software, which was intuitive for me to learn. My previous computer became obsolete, so I wasn't able to run the program anymore. Last year for my birthday, my wonderful fiancée helped me pay for a purchase of a newer Mac Mini. I downloaded a trial version, and this week I finally registered for their free Vue Pioneer. This image was my first attempt at getting back into using the 3D software.

I don't run any ads on this site, but I'd appreciate it if you check out my Cafepress shop. There are prints and products with this design available:

"Omega Computer" Concept

The "Omega Computer" concept was a graphic design project that I created in college, during my senior year at Rowan University in 2001.

My project (which I was allowed to choose) was to design "a computer of the future". I wanted to incorporate cutting-edge technologies that I thought would need to be developed for future electronic devices.

by Paul Micarelli- 2001

In 2001, there were no mass market smartphones or portable networked devices. Most people had just monochromatic cell phones (with no cameras). Commercial touchscreen tablets were just hitting the market, but were a long way from being as popular as the iPad would eventually become.

I think my predictions have proved to be pretty accurate, because many of these features are now standard functions of the iPhone, Android, and other mobile devices.

The eyepiece I designed is similar to Google Glass and other augmented reality headsets.

Some of the ideas still haven't been seen on the market yet- like the outer casings of the Omega components being infused with electronic ink (e-ink), so that it can instantly change and display any color, texture, or design. Also, Nikola Tesla's idea of wireless electric power transmission is just now beginning to gain traction in commercial products.

I created the Omega Computer back when I was a graphic arts student, so my design skills were rudimentary compared to what I could do now, after 14+ years of professional experience. I don't think it's too bad, though- considering my inexperience, as well as the limitations of the Photoshop 6 and the Infini-D 3D modeling software I was using at the time.

Even for a student project, the "Omega Computer" concept was definitely ahead of its time!...

Components of the Omega™ Computer System

"Revolutionary: Omega's computer system is the most user-friendly, powerful personal computer ever created. All devices receive wireless data and electricity so you don't have to deal with cables of any kind. Surf the internet quickly and connection free from any location. The Omega unit is compact and comfortable to hold in your hands and takes up little space when placed on a desktop. Not only is it elegantly designed, but the plastic casing is infused with electronic ink that allows you to customize the color and design of the Omega's shell at any time.

Powerful: Powerful is an understatement when describing the Omega Qflux quantum processor. This extraordinary technology uses the energy fluctuations of atomic particles to carry out computations, much like transistors of a silicon processor. However, the Qflux processor performs parallel computations at lightning speed compared to a silicon chip. This makes handling even large, complex processes such as video and 3D instantaneous!

Security: Omega gives you unprecedented security through fingerprint scanners embedded in the left & right 'click' buttons on the unit. Anybody with a different fingerprint is automaticallly recognized and prompted for a password which you can provide. Omega stores their fingerprint and name until you choose to remove them. Omega also contains a tracking device which allows the unit to be found if lost or stolen,

Multi-functional: No other device can give you the multimedia experience of the Omega. It combines  traditional computing with music and video playback, 3D virtual reality gaming, GPS navigation, telephone and video communications, and graphics. An integrated camera allows digital photography and video (when used in combination with the Head Mounted Display) or video conferencing when sitting in front of the computer. All processing is performed in real time regardless of complexity or size due to the revolutionary  Qflux processor.

Maximum Storage: Using holographic data storage technology, information is efficiently stored in the 3D space of a small cube. This tiny space holds 50 tetrabytes of information, or 5,000 gigabytes! This is much more storage capacity than any magnetic hard drive storage ever used in personal computers. All this space means room for every program, file, video, game, book, and song you want!"

The Omega Interactive Display with embedded speakers
can be either placed on a monitor stand or held.

Info sheet for Omega Interactive Display.

"Interactive: Omega Interactive Display is a flatscreen, touch-sensitive LCD monitor  that allows you to write, choose items, draw, and navigate directly using the Omega stylus. Input devices such as the mouse and drawing tablets are unnecessary with our easy to use interface.

Compact: Our 17" display is 95% viewing area, with almost no surrounding casing to take up space. You get a combination of sight and sound in one compact unit with the stereo speakers embedded behind the screen. The display also folds in half for easy transportation or storage.

Wireless: Since the Interactive Display is powered by our wireless electricity transmission and also has a wireless data connection to the Omega Computer unit, there are no cords or batteries to deal with. This means you can use it anywhere- on the sofa, in the kitchen, or outside! If you want to stay in the office, you can attach it back to its stand for a space-saving work area.

Multi-media: Our Interactive Display contains high-quality 6"x9" flat stereo speakers to complete the Omega multimedia experience. Watch video, enjoy lifelike gaming, or hear crystal clear music while computing without the burden of seperate speaker hookups!"

Info sheet for the Head-Mounted Display

"Mobile: Omega's HMD (Head-Mounted Display) is a wireless personal interface for mobile, private computing. The screen in the LCD eyepiece is navigated by looking around the screen. The cursor tracks where you are looking  using low power lasers that follow your eye movement. The buttons on the hand-held Omega unit are used to "click" an item.

Comfortable: The headband and eyepiece arm are fully adjustable for maximum comfort. Also, the eyepiece can be detached and positioned over the left or right eye. The unit fits over eyeglasses and the screen is designed for minimal occlusion, meaning the screen does not black out your surroundings, but seems to be superimposed over it. This lets you easily focus back and forth between screen and environment.

Versatile: Omega's lightweight HMD contains  a high-res LCD screen, stereo headphones, and a microphone to communicate and interface easily in one unit. Can be used in conjunction with the Omega keyboard for typing applications."

The Omega portable keyboard

Byzantium 1200

One of the amazing things that digital technology has given humanity is the ability to virtually travel through time & space.

I have posted before about the use of 3D modeling & virtual reality to reconstruct ancient cities. We are approaching the point where we will have photo-realistic, fully-populated recreations of locations that we can explore like we were really there.

Although I don't play video games anymore, the Assassin's Creed games were awesome because they let you visualize what these historic environments would have been like- better than reading about it or seeing a still picture.

I came across this website on the fascinating subreddit r/papertowns, which features drawings & reconstructions of pre-industrial cities. It is a project called Byzantium 1200 that focuses on creating a comprehensive 3D model of ancient Istanbul, Turkey.

The creators of this project also have a website with a 3D reconstruction of Babylon.

Perhaps one day, there will be something similar, or part of, Google Earth, where these virtual cities will be mapped over their actual locations & you can pick the time period you want to experience.

"Blue Sky Seed of Life" by Paul Micarelli

This is the 2nd of a series that I created, depicting a 3D version of the sacred geometry symbol, known as the "Seed of Life".

It is the core of the larger pattern of interlocking circles, "The Flower of Life".

This rendering is interesting, because you can see the hexagram, or Star of David, in the center circle. (I didn't intend for it to appear there.)

The 7 circles forming the Seed of Life is the symbol of Creation. The hexagram is the symbol of the divine union of opposites; male/female, solar/lunar, active/passive, etc.

The unique geometric form seems to be rising into the sky, & leaving the planet....

"Ocean View for Mom" by Paul Micarelli

Since it's Mother's Day,  I'm adding this still life that I made for my Mom, Karen, to my album of 3D art.

While was making this, I scanned a portrait of her that I'd drawn & included it in the scene.

She thought really liked it & still has a print of it hanging in the living room. It was inspired by a great woman who I'm fortunate to have as a mother.

3D Printing for Stone Age Tools

In my last post, I talked about using the relatively new technology of 3D printing to create abstract, fractal objects.

The beauty of this emerging technology, though, is that it can be used to produce any form that the mind can imagine. In addition to new, cutting edge applications, it can also be used to harken back to the 'cutting edges' of our prehistoric past.

On Neatorama, I saw this interesting fusion of past & future, where designers have created implements to aid the use of ancient stone tools.

In creating these modern additions to ancient technologies, the artists were able to better understand the sophisticated techniques our ancestors used to create these stone tools & weapons.

Visualizing History

As a student, I could say without a doubt that the subject I always hated the most was history.

The funny thing is that, nowadays, I'm completely fascinated by the past. I always check out The History Channel & I've posted about historical stuff alot on this blog. I'm always reading at least one book and they're often about ancient cultures or some historical theme.

I think the reason history turned me off so much when I was younger was that there was very little visual stimulation & mental interactivity involved in the lessons. From what I remember, the emphasis was on cold facts: names, events, & dates. The truly interesting aspects of society, however, are the arts, the myths, the living situations- the 'human' details that really put us into the experience of that culture.

I've found that the most invaluable tools for learning are 3D visualizations that are now possible using ever-improving rendering software. Seeing a visual representation of ancient Rome, or watching a movie like Apocalypto that's set in an ancient Mayan city gives a strikingly clear view of life in that time period. This is simply not achievable by reading words about it in a book.

One of my favorite shows is "Engineering an Empire" because of the quality of the show's 3D renderings of both art & architecture that have been lost to time.

Here are some great links I've found to sites about the virtual re-creation of historic places:
