Big Paul's Adventures in History VII

I have a lot of photos of my Dad sleeping in many different chairs, on many different occasions.

Before his retirement last year, he worked hard in the food retail business all his life. When he would get a chance to sit down & relax, it usually turns into a snoozefest. Family events or holidays inevitably become napping opportunities for the big guy.

My old friend Dan J. gave me the idea- to have pictures of my Dad sleeping right through important times in history. I thought this idea was hysterical & created this series of "snapshots" showing Big Paul experiencing historic events, in his own special way.

This is the seventh set of of "History Adventures," as he sleeps his way through the most important events in history.

To commemorate my Dad's birthday & Father's Day, I made the 3 new History Adventures below.

Big Paul's Adventures in History

Happy Birthday to my Dad, Big Paul!

My Dad is a cool dude, but works hard & has a crazy commute each day. When he gets a chance to sit down, it usually turns into a snooze-fest. I have dozens of photos of him sleeping at family parties & holidays. My friend Dan J gave me the idea to photoshop Big Paul sleeping his way through the most important events in history. I made prints of these & he couldn't stop laughing when he saw them.

Everyone who knows him can agree he's a good guy & fathered some awesome people :D

In his honor, I'm reposting his album of 'History Adventures'. He's snored through some amazing events...

Black And The Blues- "I'm Sad"

When my Dad (Big Paul) was a teenager in the 1960's, he formed a band with his childhood friends. The first band he was in was called "Black and the Blues". Their big influence was The Beatles, at the height of "Beatlemania".

My Dad and some of the other guys went on to play together in other bands, too. Some of my earliest memories are of seeing my Dad playing music with "Snuffy" or "John, Paul, Kat Band".

He still has some of the vinyl single records they had pressed. I used one of the records in a collage that I made for him for Father's Day. It had old photos of "Black and the Blues," that his friends had shared on Facebook.

One of the band members, Chuck, came across their single, "I'm Sad" that someone has digitized & uploaded to YouTube. The person who uploaded the song also added some vintage 60's footage, that gives it a music video feel.

My Dad is a very laid back guy. However, when my brother & I showed him the YouTube video, he lit up & was amazed that someone had put their old single on the Internet.

Here are some other YouTube links to where the song has been uploaded:

Now, my father & his friends have achieved digital immortality, and their memories & music will hopefully live on into the future.

The "Black and the Blues" band members were:
• John Carnuccio
• Chuck Emma
• Paul J. Micarelli
• Charlie Pestritto

Here's a "Then & Now" pic of the band, from after they got together in 2014:

Black and the Blues classic garage band John Carnuccio Chuck Emma Paul J. Micarelli Charlie Pestritto
Front to back: Charlie, Paul, Chuck, & John

My Dad's friend Chuck, another member of Black and the Blues, brought to my attention the fact that a live cover of the song was also on YouTube.

The band, The Kumari, is from the UK and did a cover of the song at The Purple Turtle Bar. My Dad & his former bandmates were amazed that, not only did anyone know about the song, but that a modern-day band bothered to learn & perform it.

Rand Paul & the Myth of Freedom

Rand Paul's
Ideal Business Model

There has been a major focus of attention toward Rand Paul, the winner of Kentucky's Republican Senate primary.

I've felt that Rand's father, Congressman Ron Paul, has made some valid criticisms of the government & financial institutions like The Fed. Especially in the years of Bush/Cheney regressive Republican rule, Ron Paul seemed like a semi-sane voice from The Right. However, I've also seen him make arguments for his "Libertarian" ideals that just aren't practical or reasonable at all.

The big ideological problem (that his son Rand Paul has seemed to adopt) is the belief that government intervention in almost any matter is negative & should be minimized to practically nothing.

This is the crux of the sudden spotlight following Rand's primary win under the 'Tea Party' banner. He has been on the record repeatedly saying the the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is flawed because it intrudes on personal ownership. His argument is that the Civil Rights Act was good for removing institutionalized discrimination, but business owners should not be told what to do by the government. He contends that the conservative Golden Calf, aka 'The Free Market', will sufficiently affect businesses to prevent social discrimination. This is, of, course, f*cking stupid.

US News & World Report:

Rand is already complaining he's "insulted" that people are insinuating he's a racist. Whether or not he's a racist isn't the issue, however. The real issue is his naïve & dangerous political ideology that sees the federal government as only a problem to be eradicated- instead of a possible source of social solutions. Unlike alot of media nitpicking over the controversial statements of public figures, this actually deserves scrutiny because it is representative of the broader political philosophy of Rand Paul & his fellow Teabaggers.

The very sharp Rachel Maddow devoted ten minutes of her show to the visual spectacle of Rand Paul dancing around the direct question, "should the Woolworth's counter have been allowed to remain segregated in 1964?" He could not say "Yes!" because that would have been a historic political suicide. However, his delusional fantasy of personal freedom & property rights prevent him from saying "No" because he seems to feel a business owner should be able to do whatever the hell he/she wants without government intervention. Therefore, he floundered around the TV screen like a fool without the courage to say what he obviously believes- that a business should be able to refuse service to a person for any reason, such as being black, foreign, gay, or Ginger.

The only problem with Rachel's interview was that she didn't push him enough in defending parallel scenarios. If the government has no place regulating business, than why have health inspectors, building codes, or liquor licenses in restaurants? I guess any place, even Chuck E. Cheese should be allowed to sell booze, build with hazardous materials, & let roaches all over the food. Sure, people may stop patronizing businesses that suck, but the whole system will have devolved into chaos in the meantime with countless people being negatively affected.

Government is not perfect- no human institution can claim to be. However, there are alot of things that the federal government is best suited to deal with. Whose going to maintain public land, invest in infrastructure, & prevent Wall St. mega-banks from preying on consumers?... a bunch of Teabaggers w/ "Obama=Stalin" signs???

This notion of "Personal Freedom" that is so dear to the Libertarian perspective is a silly myth that clouds their worldview. The idea that government doing less will always makes us more "free" is idiotic & counter-productive. No matter what, we humans are always slaves in some way - from birth to death. Freedom is an imaginary concept that has no functional meaning in the real world. If government isn't making us do things against our will, then corporate interests will find ways to enslave us. If we can somehow shake off the shackles of the business & financial world, we will still be inhibited by our environment, other people, or even our own body & mind.

These short-sighted Teabaggers with no sense of social responsibility or ability to reason outside their own narrow & selfish self-interests are hopefully playing their only practical role... winning GOP Primaries. This way, these extreme right-wing dopes can be more easily defeated by more moderate or even progressive Democratic candidates in the general election.

Big Paul's '69 Camaro

Recently, I came across an article on HotRod.com that my Dad had showed me recently.

Big Paul loves cars, and especially classic muscle cars. He was reunited with his old 1969 orange Z28 Camaro, that he sold in the late 1970's, around the time I was born.

I remember seeing it in old photos, and he was finally able to get back behind the wheel after he met the current owner, Steve Shauger. They are now friends, and have visited each other on a few occasions.

Poconos 2009

I have been enjoying my vacation week in the Poconos since I arrived w/ my family on Saturday. We are staying at Larsen Lake again this year & as always, it's been a week of ridiculousness that will inevitably result in legendary stories. :)

Poconos 2008:
The Legend of Larsen Lake

Larsen Lake Ice House

So far, we have had a great time. The only crappy thing that's happened is that my brother Justin & I (of course) got hassled & fined an obscene amount of money for not having fishing licenses & life vests in the canoe. The conservation officer, who we both thought resembled a non-sarcastic Stephen Colbert on a gaming enforcement power trip, definitely was a buzzkill. I recognize he was doing his job, but also gave us prime material for future conversation. ("BUCKMAAAAN!!!!!")

The first full day we were here, Justin, my brother-in-law, & I went hiking through Gouldsboro State Park to Tobyhanna Park. We took the overgrown "Frank Gantz red trail" that was 5+ miles of fallen trees & obscured trail markers. One person commenting in our house's guest book claimed that the trail was "impossible". We made it through to the other park in about 3 hours, though, & then called my Dad for an extraction back to Greg's truck.

The next day we went to one of the local flea markets where we enjoyed browsing the many fine wares- including weapons, crackhead fights on DVD, & bootleg clothes featuring 'Engrish' like "Michael Jackson: King of The Pop". My sister had told us about a game were you try to find the most outrageous, crazy item while browsing the flea market. I won right away by finding a stress-relief squeeze toy shaped like a single round breast w/ a nipple.

Yesterday we went to the lake beach at Gouldsboro Park & enjoyed a day in the sun. We always bring a bag full of fun stuff, so we were playing paddle ball, frisbee, football, & wiffleball home run derby. I tied my brother Joe w/ 8 homers before we called it quits due to sunburnt shoulders all around.

When we got back to the house, Justin started the grill for "Meat Fest 2009" which featured BBQ ribs & sirloin steak. Each night, we take turns making dinner to give my Mom a break & Justin prefers to cook a grill full of various meats. Justin, Greg & I continued the "Manly" theme of the night by sitting on the dock under the stars and smoking some Acid cigars.

It's been a good time so far, & since my little nephew woke me up early, I figured I'd get on here and post up some of the events so far. We are at the midpoint of the week & I'm sure there will be plenty of hijinks to come.

Longwood Gardens, PA

On Saturday, I took a trip with my parents, Big Paul & Karen, to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.

I was really looking forward to going- despite the light rain- & it ended up being much more impressive than I expected. Since I love nature & art, this was a truly enjoyable experience. Besides spending a relaxing day with my parents, I got to take in a feast of visual wonders.

My main objective was to take alot of photography. I ended up taking over 200 pictures & uploaded most of them to my Google Picasa album. The hi-res images are public under a Creative Commons license. They can be zoomed, downloaded, or you can press the "Full Screen" button for a slideshow:

Poconos 2008: The Legend of Larsen Lake

I got back from the Poconos last weekend & meant to write something about this.

My family has been going to the Poconos on and off since me & my siblings were young. We usually take a week in the summer to get a place by a lake. The last few years we've tried different places, but this year my Dad picked out a killer house by Big Bass Lake in the Poconos. Even though most of us are moved out, my family sees each other often. Last week, though, 8 of us stayed together & had a great time: me, my parents, my brothers, one of their girlfriends, my sister, and her husband.

We had a rowboat and a canoe, so most of the time someone was out on the lake, fishing or otherwise. The fishing started out really good, with almost everyone catching smaller bass the first couple days.

My brother-in-law went with me in the canoe to explore a spooky old ice house that was by railroad tracks along the lake. I took a bunch of pictures of it & we walked toward the railroad tracks nearby. We looked to our left and, to our surprise, saw a young kid in a red shirt squatting over the tracks doing something with a knife. Not wanting to startle him & also creeped out by this kid in the middle of nowhere, we backed away toward the ice house.

Later on, one of my brothers was in the canoe by himself. He snuck up & scared the same boy in a red shirt that we saw. The kid was catching minnows by an old iron rail bridge we called "The Tressle Tracks". My family is a bunch of creative, & funny people, so we often embellish reality for the sake of our own amusement. Here is where the entire week became a chance to create a crazy story.

After scaring the the boy, whom we named "The Kid in the Red Shirt", my brother was talking to him about fishing spots & stuff. He gave my brother a red Yamamoto worm lure. Although my bro-in-law & I both saw Justin from our rowboat in middle of the lake, we joked that we didn't see the kid that he was talking to - so he must have been a ghost!

After a few days of fishing & getting absolutely no more bites or anything, we had come up with a story. The Kid in the Red Shirt was obviously a evil ghost from the abandoned Ice House. He had given my brother a cursed lure that was spoiling everyone's fishing!

By Thursday, I told my brother that there was only one thing we could do. We had to take the evil lure to the Ice House and burn it to destroy the curse. He agreed, so we went out in the canoe to meet my dad, sister, & her husband in the rowboat to get the Cursed Lure from the tacklebox.

For some reason, my Dad tossed the worm & it hit the side of our canoe. We could only watch in horror as it immediately sank into the seaweed. Seeing the look of distress on our faces, my Dad told us he'd by a new pack. Only half-joking, I exclaimed "Dad, don't you understand anything?!? How are we going to get rid of the curse?" My brother actually almost considered jumping in the muck to try to retrieve it.

So we paddled away in the canoe, slightly bewildered. To make matters worse, sirens in the town suddenly starting blaring over the lake. We thought my Dad might have inadvertently ushered in the Lake Apocalypse.

That night however, my father proved that he was definitely not an agent of evil. The curse was broken, because I caught a decent size bass that same night & the next day Dad caught a little bit bigger one.
We cooked the fish up and they were delicious. Of course, I thanked the fish's spirit for nourishing my family. I mean, it's not like I'm some kind of barbarian or something! : D

I looked thrilled, as usual.

As long as Big Paul's happy,
everyone's happy

Paul Giuseppe Micarelli - 1st Birthday Party

The invitation I created for the birthday party, featuring my wild little son!

I haven't posted a lot here recently, since I work full time and spend a lot of my free time with my son, who just had his 1st birthday! Being a father is an awesome experience, and I am blessed that Paulie is healthy, smart, and already funny (even though he can't talk)!

A year ago, his birth was simultaneously the most traumatic & beautiful experience of my life. My wife and I planned on a natural home birth, but we found ourselves in a medical emergency when the baby's umbilical cord became prolapsed (pushed over his head) after Loretta's water forcefully broke. I wrote about our story shortly after:

Paul Giuseppe Micarelli - Born 6-13-20!

Having a child born during the COVID pandemic and social upheaval has really been a strange & difficult circumstance. The challenges surrounding Paul Giuseppe's birth have given us a deep, profound appreciation for his presence in our lives.

As I see him developing, I'm enjoying him more & more! He already has a little personality and cracks everyone up with his smile and funny sounds, like his dramatic laugh & grunts when doing something strenuous. Paulie is stubborn, persistent, and rough, but also very sweet and happy. He loves to play and is so curious- he is fascinated by mechanical things like clasps, buttons, and hinges. Currently, he is obsessed with wireless speakers, so I got him a little one for his birthday that is rugged enough to endure his rough handling & drool.

Here are some of the nicknames we've given him:
Lil' Rascal  • Meatball Head • Plumpkin • The Milk Goblin • Peanut • Squeaky Skadattles • Scoots • Uncle Fusster • Crank Sinatra • Lil' C-Blocker • Pig Boy • Little Mr. Fidgewidge

I've made up a character for him that I use to entertain my sister's kids... pretending he is an emperor as I carry him around & they must obey his bidding:

"Caesar Paulgustus"

I am writing this mostly for him, as a record that hopefully he gets to see someday, the same way my grandfather Joseph Micarelli recorded his experiences that I'm now able to appreciate.

Photo Album:

Paul Giuseppe Micarelli - 1st Birthday June 2021

I've also taken some video of his big day & edited together:

Every day during my morning meditation, I pray that my son lives a long, happy, & healthy life, and that Loretta & I get to see him grow up to be a fulfilled adult. I am grateful for his presence in my life and hope his light shines into the world.

Neonna Loretta Micarelli's 1st Birthday!

My daughter Neonna Loretta Micarelli turned one year old, and we had a wonderful party with many family & friends to celebrate the milestone.

Photo Album:
Neonna Loretta Micarelli 1st Birthday

Neonna is my perfect little pumpkin! She is an absolute joy from the time she wakes up in the morning, with a big grin on her face. 😄  Her presence is a blessing, bringing a smiles to the faces of everyone she meets. She is already funny and cracks me up, without being able to talk. She is active and strong, like her big brother Paul Giuseppe. Loretta & I just look at her sweet face and cannot believe it. We are so happy to celebrate such a beautiful, wonderful spirit this & every day!

Unfortunately, on her birthday our usually happy & smiley little angel was not feeling well... teething & nap-deprived, in the brutal heat. The poor baby was miserable, would not sleep, & did not want to be put down. She still had a very special day, with many family & friends coming out to celebrate her first year of life.

Paul (me) with Neonna, Paulie, & Loretta

As the day went on, she started feeling better, & I took her over to the kiddie pool and sprinkled her with water to cool her off. She finally started walking around and smiling again. Neonna has recently begun to walk, so she was getting around the party on her own two feet. Paulie was still relying on a walker on his 1st birthday (even if he did literally burn holes in his little Converse All Stars from scooting around on a concrete patio).

Although it was stressing us out not knowing how sick she was (because a baby can't tell you anything), parenting is always stressful. We were just deeply grateful that we were able to celebrate her turning one & to have her in our lives. I always knew I wanted to be a father, but it is completely overwhelming to really consider the awesome responsibility of raising a child. My wife and I started our family later in life, so we have the maturity to appreciate the wonder of manifesting a new human life into the world.

Neonna is such a pure & beautiful little soul. I hope & dream that she has a blessed life, full of happiness and fulfillment. I hope I'm around long enough to watch her & Paulie grow through the important stages of their lives and continue to enjoy their presence every day.
