A.I.-Driven Dystopia

Don't Ignore this Warning about AI

I've been watching the unbelievable advances in A.I. imagery & video, and it is completely beyond the human mind to grasp the implications of this emerging technology.

As a parent, I have endless worries about my children's safety & what they will see as they travel through this temporal experience called Life.

So, the video above really hit me when considering my kids, especially my daughter. It's based on the video If London Were Syria.

It shows a girl growing up in a dystopian future, facing existential challenges to herself & to human society, as a whole. Institutions and social structures collapse as artificial intelligence takes control of computer systems running the world. The ending (where the woman, now with her own child, is being tracked by hunter/killer robots) is such a terrifyingly real possibility- now that the field of robotics has been weaponized globally with no real checks or regulations.

The mind reels at the horrifying possibilities when watching the latest robots or drone swarms. Then, the mind absolutely recoils when faced with the realization that these powerful advancements will be controlled by the most immoral & unscrupulous among us.

For the sake of my kids & all people, I just keep hoping that humanity's ability to solve problems outpaces our tendency to create them.

how does anything exist at all?

how does anything exist at all?

I posed this question to Stable Diffusion AI, & this is an image it came back with.

It is a great metaphor- since that question is the fundamental mystery, and is ultimately unanswerable in any conventional sense.

It's pretty unsettling that AI can generate not just literal interpretations, but also "artistic" or "interpretive" creations.

Any attempt to figure out what comes next as a result of the developments in AI & other technology will also be met a with a big red X.  I'm old enough to know that the maxim is true, "Not only is the Universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we CAN think.” -Werner Heisenberg

Trump’s Republican Congress, in Awe of Their Golden God-King

Trump’s Republican Congress,
in Awe of Their Golden God-King

by The Monkey Buddha

However, a closer look reveals the disturbing reality…

Seeing the Republican cower before a buffoon like Trump has been an eye-opening lesson in craven fealty & shameless cowardice. Republicans at his joint session to Congress, clapping for ideas like annexing Greenland and cutting social services, are absolutely insane.

I generated the base image with Stable Diffusion, & stayed up late one night photoshopping all these creepy Trump-loving Congressmen's faces in, beholding Donald Trump's gold-plated, shit-stained glory.

Experience "Actual Reality"!

One of the reasons why the human race seems to be sliding deeper into a collective psychosis is because our individual minds have been hijacked by digital technology. Our devices and media have been designed to trigger all the addictive tendencies in our brains, and the result is an agitation on some level when this sensory input is removed. We feel the urge to open our phone back up, or go back to scrolling whatever feed had demanded our attention.

I am as big a fan of digital technology as anyone, but I also recognize the dangers & downfalls of its use. My remedy is to make sure that I devote time to putting the phone aside, and being present in whatever I am doing or experiencing at the moment. I've had the benefit of practicing mindfulness for many years through Zen meditation, yoga, and even my artwork. So, I am quite comfortable with just being, without the need for external distraction. Despite my desire to check my email or social media feeds, I'm able to put it aside and be sure to "stop & smell the roses". However, for people without that ability for a level of introspection or awareness, it can be so easy to just get continually sucked into the constant, never-ending stream of info & entertainment that's now at our fingertips.

This is why this video is so on point, reminding us that we have to utilize & appreciate our original sensory inputs, with the infinite universe of "Actual Reality" around us to experience:

President-for-Life Elon Musk in 2088 - Supreme Chief Executive of the USX

President-for-Life Elon Musk ~ 2088
Supreme Chief Executive of the USX

This idea came to me from the news stories about aspiring trillionaire Elon Musk's effective control of the government, & also Luigi Mangione being in prison for shooting a health insurance CEO. I could see elite power-mongers in the near future employing swarms of hunter-killer attack drones for flawless, continuous protection (at least until they are hacked or blasted with an EMP).

What really motivated me to get this post up was this video from today - of President Musk hijacking the Oval Office & absolutely blathering on about his dopey views on government, as Trump listens while hunched over The Resolute Desk in his weird orange clown makeup:

The pure, glaring irony & hypocrisy of Elon Fucking Musk, an un-elected oligarch with billions of dollars in government contracts, complaining about bureaucrats making money off the government is truly breathtaking. He is the biggest goddamn welfare queen around, having siphoned untold amounts of wealth from the American taxpayer. What a cringe-fest... although Trump's annoyance with Elon's son is almost worth enduring the rest of the insane press conference. I have trouble wrangling my toddler son at my work, & I wouldn't dream of letting his crazy ass loose in the Oval Office! I like the theory that Elon's using his kid as a human shield (at least until he gets his drones).

I hate being right about stuff like this... but like all the other sane people in this country, I knew that Elon Musk was going to be Trump's "Shadow President". Elon definitely isn't staying in the shadows, though. He's right out there, openly orchestrating the hostile takeover of the U.S. government & economy. In fact, it has become crystal clear that the world's wealthiest man is the one pulling the strings, not Trump.

Can you imagine if Pres. Biden had George Soros come into the Oval Office & describe how he's going to unilaterally reform the federal government??? The nuclear explosion coming from the collective heads of Fox News pundits would leave a smoking crater where their studios once stood. As usual, the hypocrisy is truly bottomless.

Daily Show:

Here's the terrifying reality: The ultimate goal of Musk & the other billionaire technocrats behind the scenes is actually NOT "cutting waste & corruption." That is just the cover story that voters would find agreeable, because no one can argue that the government shouldn't be more effective and efficient, right???

No, the true goal is the total decimation of the United States Government, along with its various agencies & services that benefit the public. Why, you ask? So the power & financial vacuums can be filled by private interests, who, as modern-day feudal lords, stand to make many billions from their new serfs, the American people. I watched the NYT interview with their so-called "prophet" Curtis Yarvin, & I realized these guys are self-important wannabe edge-lords who have no real understanding of humanity because their heads are so far up their own asses.

Their plan for the dismantling of representative democracy is called "The Dark Enlightenment" & Elon is openly flaunting the ideology, with his black Trump hat & his proclamation of being "Dark Gothic MAGA".

We all have already been ground under the corporate boot, but the boot is about to get much heavier for the majority of the population. Elon talking about prices & inflation coming down by 2026 due to all this "saving" is pure, ketamine-fueled bullshit. I have two small kids and I'm freaking out about the destructive potential this administration & it's rogue organizations will have on our economy & society. The fact that anyone believes either of these hokey con-men for a second is a testament to the mass delusion affecting a heavily-propagandized portion of our population.

Anyway, back to my dystopian vision of the Musky future- originally I had the top image in my head of an very elderly Elon Musk in a hoverchair, surrounded by a detail of security drones. I plugged the idea into Stable Diffusion & it gave me an awesome starting image. However, the original face didn't look anything like him, so I Photoshopped the face & other details- like the black & gold U.S.X. flag.

Here is a high-resolution version of the U.S.X. flag design... we might as well get used to using it!:

RIP iPhone 6s

I recently finally traded in my 8 year old iPhone 6s, for a current model 16.

My 6s served me very well for all those years, & I was really trying to keep it going until the proverbial wheels fell off. It was only within the last 6 months that the battery life became very short (had to keep it plugged in a lot), & I began noticing a lag in performance. I had 128 GB of storage, the most you could get at the time, & I had just recently come close to maxing it out. My new phone has 512GB, so it should let me add 10's of thousands of more pics/video in the coming years.

Eventually, A.I. will likely allow us to reconstruct (perhaps in VR) whole scenes or even chapters from our life based on our accumulated digital photo libraries. Anyway, I'll save my tech predictions for another post...

It's crazy how attached we've become to our technology, especially smartphones. I'll have a mini panic attack in the car if I think I left it at home. I have always felt that my computers & phone devices were extensions of my nervous system, tools to extend my consciousness & abilities.

Sometimes, I'll look at the phone & think what a mystifying creation it is... It's almost like magic when you closely consider the complexities of it's engineering & functionality. We carry around this light screen that allows us to communicate & even share thoughts like a form of telepathy, create or appreciate art, capture moments in time, and navigate our reality, while also giving us access to the sum of all human knowledge right in our hand. It's unbelievable!

Now, with the addictive nature of gaming & social media, our devices have become "attention prisons" of endless scrolling and clicking. Our brain is completely hooked on the interaction with the screen. It's not all brain-numbing nonsense, but the craving for the interaction of the mind with the digital devices is a psychological imperative that is too strong for most people to resist.

I try to intentionally disconnect from my phone- to read a book, pay attention to the taste of my food, play with my kids, enjoy the rare moments of silence, a chance to talk to my wife without the little gremlins hounding us (also rare nowadays), or just be present in whatever I'm doing. I have a meditative mindset, and try to maintain a sense of conscious awareness in each moment. The phone is an almost irresistible temptation, but it's vitally important to take time & experience the sensorium of "real life".

We also try to limit the kids' screen time, because we realize how addictive it is. I see kids glued to their phones, but then so are adults now. I want to help my kids to be able to be aware & mentally resilient enough to experience life directly, by disengaging from electronic media periodically.

So, as I continue on with newer & better hardware, our technology is evolving within our lifetimes, as biology as evolved through the millennia. It's truly an amazing time to be alive as so much change & novelty is taking place in our world. With how crazy things are, I just hope humanity can keep going & not destroy itself before we reach a more stable stage of species development. My phone delivers me all kinds of news that makes me nervous about our chances, but I have to stay optimistic, for the sake of my children the human race as a whole.

Jonald J.R. Trumbiden

After my last post lamenting the absurdity of the 2024 Presidential Debate, the craziness continues to unfold... an attempted assassination of Trump, Biden getting COVID again, the unhinged RNC convention where people are wearing bandages on their ear like Dear Leader (or is it "Ear Leader"?)... the shitshow continues!

The Official Monkey Buddha solution to all this political madness is simple-
Take the best of both political worlds, and meld Joseph R. Biden & Donald J. Trump into a single entity. Ladies & gentleman, with the help of A.I. imaging, I present to you:

Techno Viking A.I. Goblin

Artificial Intelligence is doing something that was definitely NOT what most people would have thought the machines would be capable of - simulating & re-creating (at least visually) what people experience in psychedelic states.

This trippy application of computer software gained prominence with the "Deep Dream" programs about 10 years ago. It generated hallucinogenic animations in which barely-recognizable imagery would cycle as weird textural features.

The Monkey Buddha Archives:
Deep Dream Images

Now, A.I. programs are just outputting the craziest, most mind-boggling imagery & video. We are breaking through to a singularity-type situation of infinite amounts of novel imagery, generated continuously. One thing I've been thinking about lately is how fusion power is developing in tandem with A.I.. Perhaps we will need a new power source to accommodate the massive amounts of clean energy that will be needed for emerging technologies in computing. It's fascinating how these interconnected innovations are evolving simultaneously.

I've posted about the possible outcomes of this paradigm-shattering technology, but I am just left in awe thinking about the implications. I don't even pretend to understand the coding & technology to produce this kind of software. It's basically Enochian magic, as far as I know. The biological human brain & society eventually won't be able to keep up with the madness that's about to ensue.

Check out this amazing A.I. alien goblin remix of the old "Techno Viking" video that had me dying:

I Spy A.I. Lies

I continue to be astounded at the developments in the field of artificial intelligence. It's partly amusing & partly horrific to see these insanely powerful tools developing so rapidly that the human race doesn't really know how to handle it.

The most disturbing aspect of A.I. (so far) is the ability to deceive people. We can no longer trust what we see or hear in digital or print media to represent objective reality. As a graphic designer, I've always been able to easily spot "Photoshopped" or digitally-altered images. Now, with more advanced A.I. renderings being so realistic, I don't trust anything I see anymore.

However, I can still often tell when images are produced by A.I. programs. Unfortunately, the general public is not as discerning as I may be. It's easy to see how people could get fooled by the amazing technologies out there, if they are used for deceptive purposes.

One recent example that has already achieved "meme" status is a Willy Wonka-themed event in Scotland that had families so upset that the cops were called. The organizer/promoter used A.I. generated imagery to evoke a magical "Wonka Wonderland" that definitely did not properly represent the lame reality of the actual event.

Parents lured to immersive Willy Wonka experience by AI ads show up to near-empty warehouse with no candy

The most iconic image to come out of the situation is the viscerally real "Sad Oompa Loompa Lady," who looks like she's cookin' up some Wonka Meth:

Another recent eaxmple of using A.I. technology, this time for for audio fakery, is the Joe Biden robo-call that used an A.I. generated simulation of Biden's voice to mislead Democratic primary voters:

Magician says political consultant hired him to create AI Biden robocall ahead of New Hampshire primary

We are in for a very wild ride into the future, as the implications of A.I being used for nefarious purposes becomes clear:

• Is that the actual voice of a politician, using a racial slur?

• Did that celebrity really get caught in a compromising sexual situation?

• Have we come into contact with extraterrestrial beings in the real world?

• Are soldiers of a particular nation truly committing war crimes?

We are already at the point where we will not be able to believe anything we see online. If we don't experience it directly with our own biological sensory organs, it could be a very convincing A.I. lie.

This is one of the aspects of artificial intelligence that people are totally not prepared to deal with... It will be interesting to see how we as a global society address these challenges and deceptions that we all will inevitably face.

Artificial Christmas Spirit

One of the most significant developments this year was the explosion of A.I. technology. We can't even imagine the possibilities that will be presenting themselves in the coming years.

It's the holiday season, and my son is 3 plus it's my baby daughter's first Christmas, so it's a lot of fun (& very exhausting).

To celebrate this holiday of the human spirit, here are some Christmas creations, by a machine!...

3D Recreation of Tenochtitlan

I love the use of 3D modeling programs to re-create ancient cities & environments. It is an immersive way to virtually travel through time and experience the glory of past civilizations. Playing the Assassins Creed games always impressed me with the way you got a sense of the historical time period, such as Renaissance Rome or Ptolemaic Egypt.

It is exciting to come across projects where artists and historians accurately replicate the appearance of an ancient site. I found this website by Thomas Kole that is devoted to the rendering of Tenochtitlan, capital of the mighty (& brutal) Aztec empire, in the location that is now Mexico City:

Portrait of Tenochtitlan

The renderings shown on the website are stunning. The Aztec city built in the middle of a lake surrounded by mountains left the Spanish conquistadors awestruck when they first saw it. (Of course, the awe was only temporary & didn't' prevent them from subjugating and eventually destroying the magnificent city.)

It was an absolute marvel of engineering & city planning, and 3D computer renderings like this are now the only way to experience the majestic nature of this lost metropolis. I would highly encourage visiting the website above & spending some time soaking in the beauty of Tenochtitlan.

I've long been fascinated by ancient Mesoamerican cultures. I've studied the art, astronomy, engineering, and societies of the Aztec and Maya people extensively. There is so much to learn from them, but unfortunately so much has been lost to conquest and time.

That is why it is so amazing to be able to use this technology to visualize the details of the time period, especially when it is done is such a meticulous and historically accurate way. Eventually, we will be able to use these digital reconstructions and virtual or augmented reality devices to "time travel" and visit such sites in an even more immersive context.

A.I. Architecture - Futuristic Green Cities

I have been dabbling in simple A.I image generation. I created pages on Facebook & Instagram under @ac_artificial_creativity.

I've been using the online program Stable Diffusion. I actually don't like the newest version, so I found the older Stable Diffusion v1.5. It's actually faster, & generates 4 images at a time. The newer version only generates one image (which is more "polished" looking), and is much slower. The one thing I like about the older version is the glitchy & weird images it could produce.

The explosion of A.I. generated art is still blowing my mind. There is now endless novel artwork being created, & I don't think we've full grasped the implications of this technology on human creative efforts. I look through my social media feeds of all this amazing imagery, thinking it's just overwhelming.

I've also begun to use generative tools in my professional life, which is just as amazing. I couldn't find the right photo of a chocolate bar online to use for a food label, so I used A.I. to make one that I could plug into the design. On another project, I had to use a photo of a cheesecake with the end cropped off, so I used Photoshop's new "generative fill" tool & it completed the crumble crust end of the cheesecake perfectly. I just thought, "Holy shit, this is insane."

Anyway, when I first started generating A.I. images, one of the series I made that made me sit back and just feel totally awe-struck was of architectural illustrations. The prompt I used was "a futuristic organically inspired city with greenery and sleek rounded architecture". The results were so impressive & beautiful, I couldn't believe they were generated by a computer program.

I think artificial intelligence software could help advance mankind in unimaginable ways, if it's not used to make a dystopian inescapable control system first. Even before the current proliferation of these programs, I've long thought we should get rid of human politicians whose self-interest & corruption fucks us all over, and feed policy problems into A.I. for the optimal solutions that benefit the greatest number of people.

Here are some more more images depicting the potential green urban utopia that A.I. could help us to implement. I think they're absolutely fantastic:

Psycho-Branding: "Twitter" to "X"

"twitter icons covering elon musk's face"
-Images: Stable Diffusion AI Software
-Prompts & Curating: Paul Micarelli

@AC.Artificial.Creativity

* Full Disclaimer*: I do not have a Twitter account, nor do I really give a shit about Twitter as a social media platform.

Of course, I've read plenty of people's tweets, mostly related to politics or current events, but mostly I would be interested in the user comments of each post. Since Elon Musk made the 'Big Brain' move to hide comments unless your logged in, I don't even bother clicking on any links to tweets anymore.

Still, it is interesting to see how Elon has been running this company head-first into the ground. It has been a definitive example of what many have suspected- that he's kind of a dipshit, who thinks he's the smartest guy in the room because he was born ridiculously wealthy & made good investments off the hard work and research of others. He is probably never told "No Elon, that's a really stupid fucking idea." It's glaringly obvious that he's a skin-thinned egomaniac, as well. I know you can't be a total invalid & be a billionaire, so he obviously has a certain level of competency. The image of a "tech genius" has been pretty well shattered, though- especially since taking over Twitter. He makes monumentally bad decisions, and the latest news about Twitter's re-branding is my field of design & branding, so I felt compelled to speak on it.

ARS TECHINCA:

Musk rushes out new Twitter logo—
it’s just an X that someone tweeted at him

To me, this is just an absolutely insane marketing / branding decision. Words like "tweet" & "follow" are now being used as common verbs because they've become so widespread, & Twitter's unique branding was originally carefully crafted by a team of experts... but yeah, Elon thinks it's a brilliant idea to completely change the identity of the platform into the uninspiring - "X". If he thinks this is edgy or cool, he's dead wrong- because it's pretty much the most lame & stupid goddamn approach imaginable. It's like he never got past the 1990's "X-Treme!" trend. I know people with big ideas have been laughed at before, but this is so comically bad it's almost like he's doing it just to troll everyone. Besides throwing away a well-established name & brand, he's replacing it with a symbol that's near universal in the tech world for "close application" or "stop process". It's also a symbol for death in many cultures. Oh, and don't forget the porn connotations!

Besides the negative, hostile symbolism, it's also super-awkward to use. He wants tweets to be called "exes" now? So, people are supposed to say, "Did you see so-and-so politician or celebrity's 'x' about that topic?" How are people supposed to search for something from the site with such a basic & general name? Ugh, it's just so, so dumb in so many ways...

Apparently, Elon's dream that he can't let go of is to turn "X.com" into a multi-purpose digital platform that covers all the bases - social media, banking, news, etc. What his dumb ass doesn't realize, is that if he can't even keep one of the most popular communication sites in the world minimally profitable, he sure as hell isn't going to be able to completely re-brand it into a successful multi-purpose platform!

When I was reading this news, I couldn't believe how asinine this idea was. You couldn't make up a worse solution if you tried. It's like "How to Destroy Your Company Brand 101" with Professor Musk. As I stated in the beginning of this post, I didn't even want to bother with a Twitter account, anyway. Thanks to Elon's shenanigans, I'll definitely be sure to stay off whatever horrible iteration of the platform he comes up with in the future.

Tiny Stinkbug Eggs

I was trimming a tomato plant & saw this cluster of tiny eggs fall off a leaf. Not sure what species they belong to, but I got some macro photography & was amazed at the structure of these tiny eggs!

Nature Photography
by Paul Micarelli

I was informed by a member of a Facebook nature photography group that they are (unfortunately) stinkbug eggs. My family is quite familiar with these bastards; they've been pretty pervasive at our home, & always seem to get inside somehow. However, I told my wife that even by bug standards, stinkbugs are dumb as shit.

Still, even life forms as stupid as a stinkbug are still miraculous. Inspiration can be found in all things, even the strange form of tiny egg pods...

Transhuman Sexuality

It's so disheartening to see that, despite all of humanity's technological & informational advancement, there is still so much primitive hate & fear for other people. There is currently a serious backlash against LGBTQ+ lifestyles in the U.S. and other places. Although I'm a straight white dude, I think other people should be free to pursue whatever experiences make them feel good. However, I also think that there needs to be limits - such as intentionally causing harm to others, or subjecting your will to non-consenting parties. Having a son now, my wife & I often discuss how we're going to deal with the complex issues of sexuality / identity. I don't think it's appropriate to force these ideas on young kids, but you also can't shelter them forever. Although what should be displayed in public is very subjective, especially when children are involved, common courtesy & discretion are ideas that I think are generally beneficial.

Sexuality and gender is such a contentious subject because it is such a basic & important aspect of being human. Sex = survival of our species. However, we have gone beyond biology in many ways - allowing us to experiment & experience possibilities outside the evolutionary imperative. So, I don't think the importance of biological purpose is enough of a reason to restrict anyone's sexual preference & other forms of personal experience.

I feel bad for people who are still offended by alternative orientations, such as homosexual or transexual. Guess what??? Things are going to get waaaay more interesting... with the explosion of A.I., as well as advancements in both physical & mental cybernetic augmentation, and bio-hacking the body to create "un-natural" biological systems. What we understand to be "human" is going to continue to evolve & change. Fear and resistance will not stop the change, any more than it stopped the transition into the Information Age.

Besides the morphological changes humans will undergo due to technological advancements, it is also inevitable that people will be straight-up fucking robots or virtual entities. So, people who are currently disgusted by people's "unnatural" sexual preferences for other human beings will absolutely lose their minds when they see the techno-debauchery to come!

There are many things about emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, that freak me out. However, I also know that things will always be changing... so you have to be open, ride the wave, & realize that the future is coming, despite your fears and feelings.

Trump & The Anti-Christ Archetype

Now, I'm not saying Donald Trump is "The Anti-Christ"... but I am saying that he's the complete opposite of the idea of Jesus Christ that has been passed down to us.

The fact that Trump is still campaigning for President, and even more so that people are still backing him, is beyond absurdity. With the prevalence of social media & endless connectivity permeating our lives, American culture itself is becoming increasingly psychotic, especially when it comes to national politics. Trump is the ultimate manifestation of that cultural psychosis.

When I was younger, the idea of an "Anti-Christ" really was weird to me, for the reason in the graphic above. I didn't have the life experience to see the power in cults of personality & the appeal to authoritarianism that would make such a phenomenon possible. Now, I see that it's not only possible, but probable. However, I view the concept of an Anti-Christ as more of an archetype than any singular individual.

I'm not a Bible literalist by any means, but what confuses me is that someone who does truly believe in the danger of an Anti-Christ figure would not look at Donald Trump & immediately go, "Ummm, I'm pretty sure that guy fits the description."

Information Overload

"Digital Self-Portrait"
by Paul Micarelli

When I started this blog in the ancient past (2005), it was a pre-social media Internet world where Myspace had just come into existence. Society was void of smartphones, so people were still mostly tied to desktop computers for access to online information.

Since then, the world and our relationship with online information has transformed dramatically. My personal relationship with the Internet has also changed. When I was in my 20's & 30's, still a bachelor living on my own, I blogged often & was very politically outspoken. Nowadays, I don't post nearly as much as I'd like. The biggest factor is having a son who's a wild and energetic toddler, with my wife & I now expecting a baby girl this summer. I work full-time as a graphic designer at a busy print shop. When I come home, I'm trying to balance getting stuff done around the house with spending time playing with my son, and still trying to share some rare moments alone with my wife. (Oh yeah, I sometimes get a few minutes for myself, too...) Life is very hectic right now, but I am trying to enjoy every moment of it.

Due to the whirlwind that I live each day, there is a combination of exhaustion & overload that prevents me from fulfilling my personal creative drive in the same way that I used to. Luckily, my career is very creative and productive, which gives me a lot of fulfillment.

When it comes to speaking out on social and political issues, I think my attitude now is mostly, "Why the fuck should I even bother?" It goes back to the title of this post - "Information Overload". The Internet & social media is now an outlet for every ignorant motherfucker on the planet to spout off stupid takes & misinformation, right alongside reasoned commentary and insightful wisdom. Debating politics with people never changes anyone's mind, and everyone is now online just arguing past each other. "Opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one, & they all stink". I still feel strongly about politics and current events, but I feel like trying to express my own stinky opinion is just futilely shouting into the wind...

So why am I still here, spouting off my thoughts? I don't know, I guess I feel like I have an obligation to continue creating content on this platform I've started. Of course, I also still have the urge to express myself for the benefit of others, even if I feel like it is drowned out among all the other noise. I have an additional motivation now, which is to leave some remnants of myself for my children to possibly discover in the future. Who knows if Blogger will even be around when they get older, but maybe my posts will be archived somehow for them to read and get a glimpse into their Dad's mind.

With the sheer volume of information online, along with the advent of mass usage of Artificial Intelligence (like my dabbling with AC: Artificial Creativity), the human brain simply cannot handle the digital infinities emerging before us. Not much shocks me, but as a creative professional, the rapid emergence of A.I. art has given me an ongoing existential crisis. Even our collective consciousness is struggling to adapt to these rapidly shifting paradigms. As I write this, we have not yet truly faced the consequences of deep fakes, A.I creations, and misinformation used for deception & social chaos. What happens when we can no longer believe anything at all that we experience online, or in the media?

Perhaps human ingenuity (augmented with A.I.-driven solutions, ironically?) will find ways to deal with these frightening prospects. Perhaps we will suffer from a digital apocalypse where humans disengage from technology and go back to analog, tribal living. Most likely, we will continue to barrel along headfirst into a techno-dystopia, where these emerging tools are used to consolidate power and control over the masses. I'm not a complete pessimist, though. I think Life will go on and people will continue to adapt, as we have since the Ice Age almost wiped us out.

I hope for my children & humanity's sake that things don't go horribly wrong and society collapses or something crazy like that. There will always be suffering and chaos, but I think that people will continue to survive & thrive one way or another. How we handle the "information overload" is going to determine our path forward and our future as a species.

AC: Artificial Creativity

I have been tinkering with A.I. generated art, using Stable Diffusion software. I am simultaneously amazed & disturbed by the novel imagery that computers are now able to create. As an artist & graphic designer, the A.I. phenomenon makes me feel like a carriage maker at the onset of automobile manufacturing.

The software I'm using is relatively basic, but it can still produce really cool art (as well as hilariously bad formulations). I actually give the software top billing on my posts, because all I'm doing is entering prompts. Yes it's a tool just like Photoshop, but the computer & code creating the imagery is almost spooky and makes you examine the nature of consciousness itself. What we understand to be consciousness or mind is an emergent cascade of phenomena, as is machine learning. However, the ability to explain the system doesn't make it any less mysterious.

The endless amounts of objectively fantastic artwork flooding social media now is just mind-boggling. Just like the Internet itself, there is no way to understand exactly where this technology is going to take society.

I have started social media pages for the A.I. art that I'm collaborating with the machines to produce. If you're reading this, I would greatly appreciate it if you check them out & follow:

There are so many questions & issues that arise from this technology...

• What does it mean for the human artist & creator?

• Will A.I. art be required to be detected & distinguished from human art, in certain circumstances? Or will that prove impossible, and proof of process will be required to verify human-made art if desired.

• Are we entering a "post-reality" reality, where we trust absolutely nothing, and objective truth no longer exists in the digital realm?

...It's all so crazy... what the hell is happening? We'll just have to buckle in & find out!

Here are some articles I've read recently about the topic as I try to wrap my head around it all:

These are some of the images I've prompted that have really blown me away, but there's so much more to come:
